México Now: Storytelling, Power, and Resistance in the 21st Century

A Mexicanists of Central New York Colloquium

Friday, October 31-Saturday, November 1
Wyckoff Center

“Mexico Now: Storytelling, Power, and Resistance in the 21st Century” is a two-day colloquium featuring renowned Mexican authors Juan Pablo Villalobos and Guadalupe Nettel as keynote speakers. The event will explore the intersections of storytelling, political agency, and cultural identity in contemporary Mexico, with a focus on literature, film, and other artistic forms as a tool of resistance and reflection.

Guadalupe Nettel (b. 1973) writes fiction that probes the complexities of identity, gender, and the body. Her novels, such as After the Winter and The Body Where I Was Born, have won numerous awards, including being short-listed for the International Booker Prize, and reflect a literary style marked by quiet intensity and psychological depth. Juan Pablo Villalobos (b. 1973) is known for his sharp, satirical novels, including Down the Rabbit Hole and I’ll Sell You a Dog, which explore themes like political corruption, inequality, and absurdism in Mexican society. His works have been translated into more than fifteen languages and praised for their dark humor and social insight.

Presenters also include:
